In an article published on May 19, 2024 in the journal BMC Ecology and Evolution, Dahari and its partners Bat Conservation International and the Mohéli National Park present the results of a biannual monitoring of the Livingstone Fruit Bat (Pteropus livingstonii) carried out between 2016 and 2023 in the Comoros.
This study aimed to understand the seasonal trends and population status of this threatened species in the Comoros. The results indicate that seasons significantly influence the number of bats at roosting sites, with an increase during the rainy season. However, the Anjouan population remained generally stable over the eight years of monitoring. The current estimate is approximately 1 to 200 individuals on Anjouan and 1 to 500 individuals on Mohéli. The study highlights the importance of long-term surveys to understand past population trends. Single counts are not sufficient to draw definitive conclusions about the status of a species.
