Bananas, cassava, taro and sweet potatoes are the main subsistence crops in Anjouan.
Subsistence farming is very extensively practised in our intervention area: a considerable amount of producers practise it on faraway plots, often on hills or in the forest. The majority of small farmers plant without fertilizing the soil and in general use less productive varieties which are more susceptible to disease.
For this reason since 2012 we have targeted the intensification of subsistence farming as a flagship activity of the NGO.
Since 2012 Dahari has imported improved varieties of seeds in order to test them in experimental centres. The varieties which have demonstrated the best results are then multiplied and offered to the farmers.
We aim to improve the income of the population, food security and the protection of natural resources through intensifying food crop production.
