Our actions to develop agroforestry in the Comoros

Our new agroforestry program currently under development aims for a productive agroecological transition by encouraging farmers to adopt agroforestry practices and reduce the use of pesticides.

  • Marine

The natural resources of the Comoros, particularly in Anjouan, are under severe pressure due to the very high population density, widespread poverty and dependence on agriculture for 80% of the population. The semi-traditional agricultural methods practiced are mostly extensive and fail to meet these challenges.

Since the 1980s, the intensification of agricultural production has generally relied on monoculture as well as the use of chemical fertilizers and pesticides. These methods accentuate the degradation of ecosystems and pose a risk to the health of the population.

Agroforestry has always had an important place in the Comorian landscape, more particularly in Anjouan, where trees and hedges are integrated with crops. However, the agroecological intensification of agroforestry plots is yet to be fully developed. The combination of crops, the use of rotations or even fertility management are rarely practiced.

These methods would improve the livelihoods of farmers, reduce pressure on forests and reefs, and guarantee better resilience to climate change.

The Dahari Agroforests Program capitalizes on our agricultural projects carried out since 2013 and our reforestation work implemented since 2016. The approach currently being developed combines the establishment of a network of “model” agroecological farms with the strengthening of reforestation in the agricultural landscape. We target both an improvement in productivity as well as the securing of ecosystem services.
